John Paul II Footsteps Wadowice - Kalwaria Zebrzydowska - Santuary of Divine Mercy in Łagiewniki
Our tour begins in Wadowice the town in which Pope John Paul ll was born and grew up. On the 18th of May 1920 Karol Wojtyla was born. You can visit the Basilica where Karol Wojtyla was baptisted, and his home, now a museum of Pope John Paul II. Among the exhibits you will find pictures, certificates, documents even his skis and many other items on display. No visit here would not be complete with out sampling the Popes cream slices.
On the return journey to Krakow we stop at Kalwaria Zebrzydowska Poland's oldest and most beautiful, Calvary complex built in the 17th century. It is a destination for tourist and pilgrims from all over the World. There is a way of the cross with 42 chapels illustrating Christ's passion. Here you will see the famous Miraculous picture of our lady of Kalwaria. Since 1999 Kalwaria is listed in the UNESCO World Heritage sites. Over a million pilgrims visit this complex every year. Here, back in 2002, Pope John Paul the II said his last Mass in Poland.
We now travel to the Santuary of Divine Mercy in Łagiewniki, a very important pilgrimage site in Poland. In the 1930's Sister Faustyna lived her until her death on 5th October 1938. The Cult of the Divine Mercy increased dramatically after her Beatification in 1993 and Canonization in 2000. The Basilica contains holy relics of St. Faustyna Kowalska and a painting of Jesus the Merciful. John Paul II called this place the capital of the cult of the Divine Mercy. For it was here that there originated the message of Divine Mercy, which Christ Himself wished to pass on to our generation, through the mediation of the Blessed St.Faustyna.
