Oswiecim - A town in south eastern Poland. Here the AUSCHWITZ- BIRKENAU concentration camp was built by the German Nazis in June 1940. Auschwitz was the largest Nazi concentration camp
but it is not its size which attracts millions of people from all over the world but the fact that it is the one of the largest cemeteries in the history of mankind. People of about 28 different nationalities died here. The Nazi had three main Konzentration lager (camps) Auschwitz, Birkenau and Monwitz, as well as 39 sub-camps in the neighbourhood. The total number of victims here is estimated at between 1 to 1.5 million people
Auschwitz 1 - As you pass through the main gate to enter the Nazi camp on the top of the gate you will see the cynical inscription, Arbeit machts frei (work sets you free) This makes you want to think of the mentality of the Nazi death regime. In the begining the first inmates to be sent to Auschwitz were Polish political prisoners in June 14 1940 and soon after followed by Russians, Gypsies, and other victims of war who were transported there. From 1942 Auschwitz became the most important camp for the mass extermination of European Jews. Today a museum consists of brick barracks with tons of hair, shoes, glasses and other belonging of the victims. A grim reminder of Nazi terror and the holocaust,"the death factory" with it's infamous crematoria.
Auschwitz II -Birkenau located some 3 km away from Auschwitz in 1941 was consructed with over 300 barracks and buildings on 175 hectares. This camp has less exhibits but is very impressive by its huge size. The German Nazis destroyed many barracks at the end of the war to hide evidence of the camp. Documents were burnt and buildings demolished. The camp was liberated by the Russian Army on January 27 1945. In 1947 the Polish Goverment decided to establish the Nationa Museum of Auschwitz-Birkenau.
